ABSTRACT
The study investigated the availability and use of technical information resources and services for increase research in production industries in the North Central Nigeria with a view to enhancing the performance of the industries. Low research performance in production industries in North Central Nigeria was the problem of the study. Survey research design was adopted. The study was carried out in the following states: Niger, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Plateau and the Federal Capital Territory – Abuja. The population o f the study is 255 researchers from ten production industries studied. The census technique was adopted because the population was not too large. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire with two parts: A and B. Part A sought information on the demographic data of the respondents while part B answered the four research questions. The instrument was face validated by two lecturers from the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and one lecturer from Department of Measurement and Evaluation, Faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The researcher adopted Cronbach alpha in determining the reliability coefficient and the result was 0.92. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire with a return rate of 80.48%. The method of data analysis for the study was through mean and standard deviation. The findings revealed that most of the mean rating of the information resources and services fell between 2.50 and above, indicating that the information availability and use positively correlated with research support in the production industries.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
Information is important for all spheres of human development. It is the blood and life wire of organizations aspiring for growth and developments. In this study, information is viewed as that vital pieces of facts or data that are accurate, timely and specifically organized for a purpose and presented within a context that gives meaning and relevance and can lead to an increase in understanding and decrease in uncertainty. Valuable information can affect human behaviour and decision - making process positively.

Most production industries depend largely on effective use of information in order to achieve the objectives of their organizations. King and Palmour (1981) in Harande (2009) asserted that most achievements in science, technology and industrial organizations today came about as a result of proper use of information. Duke (1981) in Harande (2009) stated that companies with better information, better utilization of information tend to have better decision – making and are ahead of rivals and competitors. In organizations where there exist information facilities, resources and services there is the likelihood of boosting the research activities of those organizations. This is so because these resources and services are crucial for effective researches and therefore are considered as necessary tools for research publications. Research results usually guide almost all the organizational personnel in carrying out their various functions and activities in their departments and units. Functional industrial information centers and libraries are service points where services like dispensing of information, both solicited and unsolicited are delivered. Therefore, the availability and use of these information resources and services are considered as correlates of research performances in industries in North Central Nigeria....
