DESIGN OF ACCESS ROAD FROM ‘TIPE’ SCHOOL GATE TO THE SCHOOL STAFF QUARTERS

ABSTRACT
General procedure for complete road design which is divided into geometric design, drainage design, and pavement design were adopted in the course of execution of this project. Introductory discussion were made under which highway planning, geometric design, drainage design, pavement design, and maintenance of highway were briefly discussed. Brief history of the polytechnic, scope of the project alongside the aims and objectives with purpose of the project was also enumerated. Literature on history of road development, highway development in Nigeria was reviewed. Classification of highway was listed and importance of road network was also enumerated. Methodology that look at road design from the point of view that’s reconnaissance survey, mission planning are categorized under work and then laboratory work to test soil sample collected in the field for the purpose of pavement design were fully discussed. So also, road alignment and drainage design were also discussed. All data collected were presented, analyzed and perfectly design which include readings from the instrument used. The reduced level on vertical curve was computed and drawings on A3 drawing sheets were produced. Pavement and drainage channel were designed and all necessary tables and charts were included. The entire write up was included with references and recommendations were then made.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0           INTRODUCTION
In big metropolitan cities, reaching the working places requires a good system of transportation, which maybe in the form of urban railway system, or bus system. A farmer can move his agricultural produce to the nearby market economically only through a good system of roads. As blood circulation through body arteries is essential for wellbeing of a human being, similarly a good system of transportation is essential for wellbeing of a nation. In recognition of the vital importance of highways to the wellbeing of the nation, most developing countries spend more than 60percent of their transportation budget on highway development and maintenance. While discussing the general effects of good transportation system, it may be said that the increased productivity and its efficient transportation can lower the cost of production. The transformation cost is always an influencing factor on cost of commodities. The Civil engineer is responsible for the planning, design, construction and maintenance of highway facilities.
